Our Story

Our journey began in 2018 when our partners, either romantic or business decided on opening a brewery in Downtown Toms River. Despite our concerns and protests,  they proceeded anyway. Their first step was to buy a building in historic downtown Toms River.  They found their ideal location not far from Huddy Park on the Toms River. Renovations of this old building took a little longer than anticipated and just as things started moving and it looked like the end was in sight, the brewery faced another daunting challenge in the COVID-19 pandemic. But they worked hard and forged through, finally opening to great fanfare in August 2020.

The brewery became a symbol of revitalization and triumph for the town. It has become a significant part of the community now, along with establishing a strong presence in the beer industry.

We are all very happy for them and what they accomplished. The only issue was we are not the biggest beer fans. We are whiskey girls. We actually love spirits of all kinds. We recognized the gap in the market for spirits led by women for women, particularly among whiskey enthusiast like ourselves. Heather Carney and Tracy Bacon asked Melissa Morrison and Kristin Capone to start the strong women led business Whiskey4Woman, LLC, a premium spirts business to enhance the experience and improve accessibility of premium spirits and related ready to drink (RTD) cocktails. So, they leveraged their passion for spirits with the support and knowledge of the alcohol value chain from their partners into the Battle Grounds Distilling brand under Whiskey4Woman, LLC.

The name was strategically chosen as it started in the downtown Toms River area. Toms River has a deep history of the Revolutionary War and Joshua Huddy (remember where the brewery was located). Joshua Huddy was a prominent figure during the American Revolutionary War. He served as a captain in the Continental Army and later as a privateer. Huddy is perhaps most well-known for his tragic death at the hands of Loyalist forces in 1782. He was captured by British loyalists and executed in retaliation for the death of a British officer. His execution sparked outrage and retaliation from the Patriots, escalating tensions in the region. All the names and images of the spirits will reflect this history.
